Golden morning light pouring over a peaceful renewed earth with green hills, still water and a shining city on the horizon
Eternity

Life in Heaven, forever and ever

What will we do for all eternity? And what will we never have to face again? Here is what the Bible promises to everyone who belongs to God.

If you are hurting today

This world is not the end of the story

Pain, grief, loneliness and sorrow are real, and God does not ask you to pretend they aren’t. But for those who belong to Him, they are not the final chapter.

The Bible says God is preparing a forever home where every tear is wiped away and everything broken is made new. That hope is not wishful thinking. It rests on Yeshua (Jesus), who died for our sins and rose from the dead.

“For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;”2 Corinthians 4:17

What Will We Do in Heaven for Eternity?

Heaven is not endless sitting on clouds. It is real, joyful, purposeful life in the presence of the God who made us.

  • Live in God’s presence and worship Him

People from every nation will stand before His throne and praise Him with joy.

“After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;”Revelation 7:9
  • See God face to face

What no one could see in this life, God’s people will see forever, and we will be like Him.

“Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.”1 John 3:2
  • Serve Him with joy

Work without weariness, frustration or failure. Serving God will be pure delight.

“And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:”Revelation 22:3
  • Reign with Christ

God’s people will share in the rule of His everlasting Kingdom.

“If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:”2 Timothy 2:12
  • Enter God’s rest

Deep, lasting rest for every weary heart. No more striving, worry or exhaustion.

“There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.”Hebrews 4:9
  • Feast with the family of God

A great celebration where people from east and west sit down together in the Kingdom.

“And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.”Matthew 8:11
  • Live in glorious new bodies

Real, resurrected bodies that never age, tire, get sick or die.

“Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.”Philippians 3:21
  • Build, plant and enjoy

The prophets picture God’s people living, building and enjoying the fruit of their work in His renewed creation.

“And they shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them.”Isaiah 65:21
Jesus smiling with open arms at the center of a joyful crowd from every nation, singing, raising their hands and holding palm branches in golden heavenly light

The greatest joy of all

The best part of eternity is not the golden streets or the beauty of the city. It is God Himself. Every good thing we will enjoy flows from being with Him, and the Bible says it is better than anything we can imagine.

“Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.”Psalm 16:11
“But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.”1 Corinthians 2:9

What We Will Never Experience Again

Everything that hurts us in this life has an expiry date. In God’s eternal Kingdom, these things will be gone forever.

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”

Revelation 21:4 (KJV)
  • No moreTears and sorrow

Grief, heartbreak and mourning will be over. God Himself will comfort His people.

“Thy sun shall no more go down; neither shall thy moon withdraw itself: for the LORD shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended.”Isaiah 60:20
  • No moreDeath

No more goodbyes, funerals or graves. Death itself will be defeated.

“O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?”1 Corinthians 15:55
  • No moreSickness

No illness, hospital rooms or chronic pain. No one will ever say “I am sick.”

“And the inhabitant shall not say, I am sick: the people that dwell therein shall be forgiven their iniquity.”Isaiah 33:24
  • No moreBroken bodies

Every weakness and disability will be healed, and bodies will be whole and strong.

“Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing:”Isaiah 35:5-6
  • No moreHunger and thirst

No want, poverty or need. The Lamb Himself will care for His people.

“They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat.”Revelation 7:16
  • No moreDarkness and fear

No night, no shadows, nothing to be afraid of. God’s glory will light everything.

“And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.”Revelation 21:25
  • No moreSin and evil

No lies, cruelty, temptation or shame. Nothing that defiles will ever enter.

“And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.”Revelation 21:27
  • No moreWar and violence

No conflict, abuse or harm of any kind. Perfect peace will fill the earth.

“They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.”Isaiah 11:9
  • No moreThe curse

Everything that went wrong when sin entered the world will finally be undone.

“And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it;”Revelation 22:3
The former things are passed away.

Whatever you are carrying today, God sees it, and one day He will make all things new.

Death swallowed up in victory1 Corinthians 15:51-55

51Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,

52In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

53For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

54So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.

55O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?

1Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

2In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

Our new bodies

Raised, glorious and imperishable

Real bodies, made new

Eternity is not life as a ghost. Just as Yeshua rose bodily from the grave, His people will be raised with real bodies that can never decay, get sick or die.

Like His glorious body

After His resurrection, Jesus ate, spoke and was touched by His friends, yet His body was glorified. Scripture says ours will be fashioned like His.

“So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption:”1 Corinthians 15:42
“Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.”Philippians 3:21

Reunited with loved ones

Hope beyond the goodbye

Not grieving without hope

Grief is real, and Jesus Himself wept at a friend’s grave. But for those who belong to Him, goodbye is not forever. God will bring believers together to be with the Lord.

The Bible doesn’t answer every detail about relationships in eternity. What it does promise is that we will know fully, not less than we do now, and that we will be together with the Lord forever.

“For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.”1 Thessalonians 4:14
“For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.”1 Corinthians 13:12

The new heaven and new earth

God makes all things new

Creation restored

God does not throw His creation away. He renews it. The Bible ends with a new heaven and a new earth, where Heaven and earth are joined and God lives with His people.

Peace in all creation

The prophets describe a world where even the animals live in peace, and nothing hurts or destroys.

“For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.”Isaiah 65:17
“The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them.”Isaiah 11:6

The river and tree of life

Endless life and healing

What Eden lost, God restores

The tree of life first appears in the Garden of Eden. In eternity it grows again beside a river flowing from God’s throne, a picture of life that never runs out.

“And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.”Revelation 22:1
“For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.”Revelation 7:17

A city with no night

God Himself is the light

Light from His presence

The holy city needs no sun or moon. The glory of God fills it with light, and the Lamb, Yeshua, is its lamp. There is no darkness there at all.

“And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.”Revelation 21:23

Who will be there?

The open invitation

A door open to everyone

No one earns a place in eternity by being good enough. Every one of us has sinned. But God offers eternal life as a free gift to everyone who turns from sin and trusts in Yeshua, who died for our sins and rose again.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”John 3:16
“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”John 14:6
